The AILEEN project brings together education providers, research organisations and industry partners from seven European countries: Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Portugal, Spain, the United Kingdom and Turkeye.
The project addresses one of the key challenges facing the European aerospace and defence sectors: ensuring access to the specialised skills and qualified workforce needed for advanced manufacturing.
AILEEN is establishing a European network of Centres of Vocational Excellence (CoVEs) for advanced manufacturing in aerospace and defence. The network strengthens cooperation between education, research and industry and helps ensure that training and qualifications develop in line with technological advances and the needs of companies.
AILEEN focuses on key advanced manufacturing areas including:
Additive manufacturing
Welding and advanced welding processes
Brazing
Inspection and quality assurance
Digital technologies in manufacturing
Sustainable and greener manufacturing
Qualification, certification and industry standards
Through the project, partners develop and test new approaches to vocational education and training, including pilot courses, apprenticeships, applied research, staff mobility, skills competitions and capacity-building activities.
AILEEN has also developed a European Training Catalogue covering different levels of expertise – from introductory training and upskilling to specialised and internationally recognised qualifications. The aim is to create flexible learning pathways for operators, technicians, engineers, inspectors and other professionals working with advanced manufacturing.
The AILEEN CoVE network is designed to create lasting cooperation between training providers and industry across Europe. Nominated AILEEN CoVEs are recognised for their ability to respond to aerospace and defence manufacturing skills needs, provide specialised and high-quality training and maintain close cooperation with industry.
By connecting expertise, training facilities, technologies and best practices across borders, AILEEN contributes to strengthening the European skills base and supporting innovation and competitiveness within the aerospace and defence sectors.
CenSec leads the project’s work on dissemination and impact (WP7). In this role, CenSec contributes to communicating project results, engaging relevant stakeholders and strengthening the connection between AILEEN’s education and training activities and the wider European aerospace and defence ecosystem.
The project thereby supports CenSec’s broader work to strengthen cooperation between companies, knowledge institutions and other actors and to ensure that skills development keeps pace with technological and industrial developments in the defence and aerospace sectors.
